Part 5: Tips & Strategies for the UCAT
In part 5 of our UCAT guide, we’ll break down proven techniques to help you tackle each subtest with confidence. Whether you need tips for managing time pressure or help mastering specific question types, these tips will sharpen your skills.
The Importance of Learning Strategies for the UCAT
Every section of the UCAT evaluates specific cognitive skills, and these can all be developed with structured practice. From interpreting information quickly to making logical decisions under tight time pressure, each subtest has a method behind it. The good news? These are trainable skills. By working strategically, refining your approach and getting used to the format, you can significantly boost your score.
Below, we’ll explore practical strategies for each part of the UCAT.
Strategies for the Verbal Reasoning Subtest
The Verbal Reasoning subtest assesses your ability to understand and critically evaluate written information. You’ll be asked to make inferences, determine truth from short texts and identify assumptions, all under time pressure.
Techniques:
- Skim effectively – Read the question first, then scan the passage for relevant keywords.
- Don’t overthink ‘true/false/can’t tell’ – Base your answer only on the information provided, not prior knowledge.
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers quickly – Narrowing your options improves your speed.
- Practice under timed conditions – Simulate real exam timing to build efficiency.
- Highlight key words mentally – Focus on qualifiers like “always”, “most” or “some”.
Strategies for the Decision Making Subtest
This subtest challenges your ability to apply logic, evaluate arguments and make sound judgements from complex data. Questions may involve charts, syllogisms or logical puzzles.
Techniques:
- Familiarise yourself with question types – Recognising the format will help you respond faster.
- Use diagrams – For logic puzzles or syllogisms, drawing diagrams can help clarify relationships.
- Prioritise easy wins – Don’t get stuck on one question; flag it and move on.
- Practice mental maths – Logic-based questions will often require mental maths.
- Stay calm under uncertainty – Sometimes you’re picking the most reasonable answer, not the perfect one.
Strategies for the Quantitative Reasoning Subtest
Quantitative Reasoning tests your ability to solve numerical problems quickly and accurately. It’s not advanced maths, but it does require fast processing and estimation.
Techniques:
- Brush up on basic maths – Percentages, ratios, averages and speed/time are frequent topics.
- Estimate where possible – Exact calculations aren’t always needed.
- Identify irrelevant data – Cut through the clutter to focus on what’s necessary.
- Time-box each question – Don’t spend too long on one problem. Guess and move on if needed.
Strategies for the Situational Judgement Subtest
This subtest evaluates your understanding of ethical behaviour and decision-making in healthcare scenarios. It measures how appropriately you respond to real-world situations.
Techniques:
- Think like a medical professional – Prioritise honesty, responsibility and teamwork.
- Know the difference between importance & appropriateness – Some actions are right, but not the most important.
- Don’t be extreme – Avoid answers that are too harsh or too lenient unless clearly justified.
- Review official UCAT Situational Judgement scenarios – Understand the reasoning behind “model” answers.
Tips for Managing Time
Time pressure is one of the biggest challenges in the UCAT. With around 2 minutes or less per question, being fast and accurate is key.
Techniques:
- Stick to a time limit per question – If you hit your limit, guess and move on.
- Practice with a timer – Build time awareness into your study habits.
- Use keyboard shortcuts in the official test format – This can shave off valuable seconds.
- Answer easy questions first – Don’t waste time struggling early on.
- Flag & return – Use the flag feature to mark tricky questions and revisit them if time allows.
