Part 6: The Process Behind Your UCAT Score Calculation

In this part of our UCAT guide, we’ll explain how your UCAT score is calculated, how scaling works and what the UCAT test statistics mean for your results.

How is UCAT Scored?

Your UCAT score is based on the number of questions you answer correctly across the different sections of the test. However, because each subtest in the UCAT has a different number of questions, raw UCAT marks aren’t directly comparable between them. Instead, your performance is converted into a scaled UCAT score for each subtest. This score conversion ensures fairness, regardless of variations in section length or difficulty. Once scaling is complete, your UCAT score table is compiled by adding together the scaled scores. This total score is what universities use when comparing candidates.

How UCAT Marks Are Awarded in the Cognitive Subtests

The UCAT cognitive subtests (Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Decision Making) each have a different number of questions. Because of this, raw UCAT marks cannot be compared across sections, so a scaling system is applied. Each subtest’s raw score is converted to a scaled UCAT score ranging from 300 to 900, and together these form a combined total score. This scoring method creates consistency, allowing a clear UCAT score conversion that fairly reflects performance across all subtests.

For most questions, one correct answer equals one mark. In the Decision Making section, however, multiple-statement questions are worth two marks: one for a partially correct response, and two for a fully correct response.

How UCAT Marks Are Awarded in the Situational Judgement Subtest

The Situational Judgement section is scored differently from the cognitive areas. Instead of a raw total, you’ll earn full marks when your answer matches the ‘most correct’ option and partial credit when your choice is close to the best response. These marks are reported separately from the cognitive UCAT score, and they play an important role in the selection process for many medical and dental schools.

UCAT Results

After you complete the exam, you’ll receive a UCAT score report that outlines your individual UCAT score and compares it against the wider cohort. This report provides insight into the UCAT average score for the year, shows UCAT test statistics for each section and compares the current year’s cohort against previous years. Reviewing this data can help you understand your UCAT score to percentile ranking, where you stand relative to others and what UCAT pass rate trends look like.
